  • Biography

I am a medical doctor, and trained as a psychiatrist . Latterly I worked in a high secure forensic hospital in Scotland as a consultant psychiatrist, retiring in June 2009.
My yoga journey began in 1972 with weekly Iyengar classes until the early 80s, when family and work pressures intervened. In 1995 I resumed yoga studies and qualified as a teacher with Yoga Scotland (then SYTA) in 2001. I completed a one-year training in pranayama in 2002. I fell in love with Satyananda Yoga via Swami Pragyamurti who taught at the annual residential meeting of Yoga Scotland. in 2003 (?) I've been studying and practicing within the Satyananda tradition for the past 9 years. I was given the name Bijam in 2006 and in 2007 I completed the Satyananda Integration Course with Swami Vedantananda Saraswati. With my professional background I have a great interest in yoga and mental health and have run several courses and day seminars on these health issues. In June 2010 I was fortunate to be initiated as a karma sannyasin.
